Found in small rainforest creeks. The collection sites have clear and tannin-stained water. The typical habitats were composed of muddy substrate, with only one site consisting of submerged aquatic vegetation (Barclaya sp.). Undisturbed habitats were partially covered by forest canopy, whereas disturbed sites were exposed to sunlight. Occurs together with Melanotaenia goldiei, Melanotaenia rubrostriata, Pseudomugil sp., and Ambassis agrammus. Prefers shallow (10-20 cm depth) areas usually covered with floating grass. Attains sexual maturity at approximately 2.5 cm SL and age of 6 months based on aquarium observations.
