Very common cichlid of the shallow intermediate habitat. Has been caught at a depth of 25 m. Usually solitary and hovers well above the ground; prefers sand and digs large crater-shaped nests, even when there rocks offering good shelters nearby, a fact that shows that the choice of a nest site can be very revealing of a species ecology. Carnivorous, preys on fish. Also feeds on invertebrates.
Two completely different aquariums: forest rivers with soft, brown water, roots and leaves, and Rift Valley lake cichlids in hard, alkaline water with big rock piles.
