A resident intertidal species with homing behavior and amphibious air-breather, found in brackish mud flats in mangrove and nipa palm areas. Found in both littoral and estuarine; able to climb out of water, in mangrove swamps and burrowing into intertidal mud banks. Occasionally in the lower parts of freshwater streams. Actively shuttling back and forth between rock pools and air. It feeds on worms, crustaceans, and insects. Can stay out of the water for up to 37 h if kept moist.
Two completely different aquariums: forest rivers with soft, brown water, roots and leaves, and Rift Valley lake cichlids in hard, alkaline water with big rock piles.
Two aquariums from Southeast Asia: calm forest streams and peat swamps with soft, brown water, and fast mountain streams with cool, oxygen-rich water.
The home of rainbowfish: water, substrate, plants and light for rainbowfish, blue-eyes and peacock gudgeons, with a long aquarium and open water in the middle.
From the store to the tank: how to get the fish used to your water, why you should add only a few at a time, and what to watch for in the first few days.
